AOYAMA Waka
Professor of the Institute of Advanced Studies on Asia, the University of Tokyo; Visiting Researcher of the Joint Ateneo Institute for Mindanao Economics, Ateneo de Davao University.
Aoyama Waka is an ethnographer specializing in Southeast Asian studies with a focus on the Southern Philippines. Her research interests include human wellbeing, care and resilience in the changing globalized world(s). She has continuously visited the Sama-Bajau communities in Davao City, Mindanao, the Philippines, since 1997. Her work has received multiple awards, among which is the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Prize in 2012, the most prestigious academic prize given to outstanding scholars under age 45.
