南部アフリカに暮らすサン(ブッシュマン)は、現代に生きる狩猟採集民、地域の政治経済システムの中で周縁に追いやられてきた人々、その存在と権利の承認を求めて闘う先住民といった描かれ方の間で揺れてきた。ナミビアに住むクン・サンにおけるエスニシティの構成過程を分析することを通じて、そうした研究史を再考し、新たなサンの像を探る。
